How does it work

Iron is a metal that exists in high quantities within the earth, in foods, and in every animal’s body. It is a highly important metal required by our body as it carries oxygen and is part of cell growth. Without proper levels of iron in our body, you can expect to experience fatigue, lower brain function, and many other symptoms.

 

While plants do provide a good iron source, the type of iron that they have is different than animal originated iron. Plant based iron is called “non-heme” iron, while iron originated from animal blood is called “heme” iron. Heme iron is absorbed very efficiently by our body. Iron in plants such as lentils and beans are arranged in a different chemical structure (nonheme iron) and are not as well absorbed as heme iron. Since getting adequate levels of iron comes from eating meat, those who are vegetarian, vegan or occasionally non-vegetarian have the most difficulty getting the right amounts of iron into their system. Meat eaters are more likely to get high levels of iron in their daily diet, and those that have a balanced omnivorous diet are likely to have the right iron levels. Since non-heme iron is not as easily absorbed, vegans, vegetarians and occasional meat eaters may need to take iron supplements designed to be absorbed easily by the body.

 

Iron absorption refers to the amount of dietary iron that our body obtains from food. Healthy adults absorb about 15% of the iron in their diet, but our actual absorption is influenced by our body’s iron stores, the type of iron in the diet, and by other dietary factors that either help or hinder iron absorption.

 

Iron is an essential mineral and an important component of proteins involved in oxygen transport and metabolism. Almost two-thirds of the iron in our body is found in haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to our body’s tissues. Smaller amounts of iron are found in myoglobin, a protein that helps supply oxygen to muscle, and in enzymes that assist biochemical reactions in cells. About 15 percent of our body’s iron is stored for future needs and mobilized when dietary intake is inadequate. The remainder is in our body’s tissues as part of proteins that help our body function. Adult men and post-menopausal women lose very little iron except through bleeding. Women with heavy monthly periods can lose a significant amount of iron. Our body usually maintains normal iron status by controlling the amount of iron absorbed from food.
